Designing a full-color book is more than just arranging words and images on a page. It’s about crafting a seamless reading experience—one that feels intentional, cohesive, and visually engaging. That was my challenge when Creation Book Publishers approached me to handle the full-color book design and layout for the second edition of By Design by Jonathan Sarfati.
This wasn’t just any book. It was a complex, image-heavy, 326-page exploration of intelligent design—one that required a meticulous approach to both structure and aesthetics.

Fixing a Flawed Foundation
The project didn’t start with a clean slate. A template prototype was provided, but it was incomplete and technically flawed. The InDesign file wasn’t set up properly, meaning I had to clean up the entire file before any real design work could begin.
The challenge didn’t stop there. The client wanted a dynamic book spread design, avoiding rigid, boxy layouts. That meant breaking free from standard grids and simple photo placements to create a more engaging, fluid visual experience.

A Massive Undertaking—437 Images & 16 Chapters
With 437 images spread across 16 chapters, this wasn’t a straightforward book layout. Some images were provided, but many were just placeholders. It was up to me to find, refine, and integrate the right visuals to bring the book to life.
To maintain consistency, I also redrew vector images, ensuring a cohesive visual style across all chapters. The book’s design needed to feel polished and intentional, not like a collection of disparate elements thrown together.
Each chapter concluded with endnotes, requiring precise formatting to keep the text both readable and structured without disrupting the flow of the book.

Balancing Complexity & Readability
A book packed with images and deep scientific concepts can easily become overwhelming. My job was to balance dense information with an intuitive, visually appealing layout. Each spread needed to feel engaging while still guiding the reader through the material effortlessly.
This meant playing with dynamic text placement, integrating imagery in a way that enhanced the content, and ensuring the layout flowed naturally.

The Result: A Book I’m Proud Of
After countless hours of refining the layout, adjusting images, and ensuring every page met the highest standards, the final design was one of the most complex and rewarding projects I’ve ever worked on.
The client was happy with the result. The book now stands as a visually compelling, well-structured, and cohesive edition that presents By Design in a way that’s as engaging as its content.
While I’m not sure if it has been published yet, I know that this full-color book design and interior book layout pushed my skills to the limit—and the outcome speaks for itself.
